Go Fishing at Cebu Wetland

IMG_1433

Back in High School, Cebu Wetland was merely a place for people to visit to go boating and fishing. That’s about it. Today, Cebu Wetland has become a resort with 20 new rooms and a pool. You could also have a quiet dinner at their restaurant which is surrounded by water and live fishes.

Located in highway Tagonol, the resort has a swimming pool and a manmade fishpond with tilapia and catfish that visitors can catch. Visitors can also do so from the edge of the pond or from the three floating restaurants that jut out to the pond, or better still, from a pedal-paddle boat crafted by the resort owner, Engr. Julito Roden. Wetland has five of these pedal-paddle boats, which move around the pond by pedaling, or by paddling, or both.

Wetland is a dream being realized by Engr. Roden. When he was 16, he came to Cebu—he is from Southern Leyte—to continue his studies in the big city. He has been here since then, finishing mechanical engineering and landing in second place in the board exam in 1963. He also took up electrical engineering and passed the board, third place, in 1969.

the place has attracted visitors and has been catering to parties: baptismal, birthdays, and clan reunions. The place, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., is crowded on weekends when, to further entertain its guests, the Synapse band plays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m

There is no entrance fee. If you want, you can avail their boat rides for only P 50.oo which is already unlimited. The pool’s usage is P 100.00.

Lipa City’s Food Finds

map copyMost people go to Lipa City for the beaches and the historical sceneries. But this place is also a haven for foodies. What’s great about it is that the city is just outside Metro Manila, thus very accessible.

Here are some little-known food finds in Lipa, to feed your gastronomic adventure.

Dulcissima Bakeshop

A tiny backeshop that specializes in its cheesecakes and cream puffs. You can get basic puffs and cheesecakes anywhere in Metro Manila, but you have to travel a few miles to get one that tastes a bit differently. The cheesecakes are individually packed like tart and has a very distinct flavor. It’s hard to stop eating just one or two. The cream puffs, on the other hand, are a nice blend of moist, puffy and crunchy.

Milk Joy

Perhaps the tastiest milk I’ve ever come across, Milk Joy actually supplies Starbucks and has been, since 1993, a household name in the city. Milk Joy is also found in selected groceries in Metro Manila. But of course, in Lipa, you can find it anywhere.

Lomi King

Lomi is very popular in Batangas and the best lomi house to go to is Lomi King, which is already an institution as it was built in 1968. The secret to this delectable dish is in always having everything farm fresh. The food is served without flavoring and the vegetables aren’t mixed into the soup to keep it fresh, too.

Café de Lipa

Get your caffeine fix with Café de Lipa’s authentic Kapeng Barako. The coffee is world class but doesn’t carry the expensive $$$ price tag. Try their Caramel Macchiato, the ultimate best seller when you are in Lipa.

No Parking Space, No Car Registration — LTO

usb_minicar_garageThe Land Transportation Office will be issuing a new requirement for those wanting to get their new car registered — if you can’t show proof you’re going to have a decent garage for your new car, you cannot get a registration.

This new ruling follows after a spate of reports from citizens about private vehicles taking up space and making public roads their parking space.

This new ruling is actually an ordinance passed in Congress by Rep. Narciso D. Santiago III who says, “Streets become overnight parking lots as both sides are crammed with private vehicles. People should be disciplined enough to be able to furnish their vehicles with the appropriate parking space inside their own lots.” [Read Press Release here.]

It is up to the LTO to make sure that this is properly implemented.

But residents of the Philippines, what’s your take on this?

Brownout Rotation To Affect Luzon

Screen shot 2010-02-12 at 12.14.14 PMIt’s still the middle of February and as it is, the weather has been scorching hot. It’s as if summer is already here. But reports say that things are just getting warmed up and it will get worse.

So worse that Philippine Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes has announced that Luzon may have to make a few adjustments with the power supply. Because the dams that power electric plants are almost below their capacity and is drying up, Luzon will be experiencing rotating brownouts of three hours, to conserve resources.

The power interruptions are expected to last for two to three hours and will take place twice daily. This is expected to go on for at least two weeks or until the expected supply comes. Residents are already experiencing the interruptions since last night, with some unable to go to sleep due to the weather.

More details are found on this report.

The New Nature Park in Cebu

3082565042_3e4959b1ce

If you’re working on an 8 to 5 job or probably on graveyard shift, then I suggest that you visit the mountains for some peace and relaxation. The newly opened Eco-friendly park in Busay gives you the opportunity to detoxify your mind and soul. Located at the hills of Cebu is Kan Irag Natures Park.

The Kan-irag Nature Park is a newly opened watershed and nature park in the uplands of Cebu City. It was once a bald mountain, but due to reforestation with native trees, the area became a functioning watershed. It is home to about 27 native bird species, such as the Emerald dove, Asian Glossy Starling, the Collared Kingfisher, the Black-naped Oriole, and the Olive-backed Sunbird. The park’s size is 71 hectares.

Ayala Heights Cebu was supposed to be a posh subdivision ala Maria Luisa or Beverly Hills in one of the mountain barangays of Cebu City. However the development was overtaken by a presidential decree since the area where it belongs is a watershed.

Travel-Cebu gave us some brief background of the new place.

“The Kan-irag Nature Park, developed by Ayala Land Inc., sits on a 70-hectare site at Ayala Heights in Cebu City. So far, only 20 hectares have been developed which boasts of a nature trail featuring some of Cebu’s native flora and fauna.

The park management is aiming to introduce additional features next year such as zip line, mountain climbing, horse back riding, camping, fishing, etc. Expect no zoos here since the entire nature park is a natural habitat — putting such will just defeat the purpose. According to the park ranger who also acted as our guide all throughout, they are expecting some animals like monkeys to come back and thrive in the park. To date, various species of birds can be found, the most popular of which is the Kingfisher.”

Its breathtaking to smell the airs of busay and see the whole city from the top. City lights are also best seen on night.
