RIP Corazon Aquino (1933-2009)

Former Philippine President Corazon AquinoToday is a sad day for the Philippines. Former President Corazon Aquino, the wife of the assassinated former Senator Benigno Aquino died of cardiac arrest at 3:18 a.m. at the Makati Medical Hospital in Makati City, Philippines. Mrs. Cory Aquino had been battling colon cancer for quite some time but had already been confined in the hospital for over a month now.

Ms. Cory Aquino was a first in a lot of things. She was the icon of Philippine Democracy, responsible for restoring order back in 1986. She was already the first Female president of the Philippines and one of the authors of the first famed People Power Revolution.

Among her distinctive marks included her clad yellow outfit and the simple motherly look that endeared her to many. Requiem Masses were scheduled for later Saturday, and yellow ribbons were tied on trees around her neighborhood in Quezon city.

Aquino’s body will lie in state at the De La Salle Catholic school in Manila from Saturday evening to Monday morning, and she will be buried beside her husband at the Manila Memorial Park in a private ceremony Wednesday. The bereaved Aquino family opted for a private funeral over the traditional state funeral due.

In honor of her passing, the Philippines will observe 10 days of mourning in memory of the former president of the Philippines.

After stepping down in 1992, Aquino remained active in social and political causes.

For the family of the late former President Corazon Aquino, our deepest condolences.
